A barium swallow, meal, or follow-through requires the patient to ingest a chalky liquid to coat the gastrointestinal tract. Conversely, an IVU involves injecting a contrast agent into a vein, which is then filtered by the kidneys to illuminate the entire urinary system as it exits the body.

Physicians routinely order these specialized fluoroscopic imaging studies to investigate complex structural or functional medical conditions. Barium studies are highly effective for diagnosing swallowing disorders, acid reflux, stomach ulcers, and intestinal blockages. An IVU is primarily utilized to detect kidney stones, bladder abnormalities, and unexplained blood in the urine. Because these procedures track the live movement of contrast material, they require specific patient preparation, such as fasting or bowel cleansing, to ensure optimal image clarity and diagnostic accuracy.
