A scrotal scan, or testicular ultrasound, is a safe, painless imaging test used to evaluate the male reproductive organs. The procedure uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed, real-time images of the testicles, the epididymis (the tubes that store sperm), and the scrotum. A sonographer applies a warm, clear gel to the area and gently moves a handheld transducer over the skin. Because it uses sound waves instead of harmful radiation, it is a highly safe diagnostic tool for patients of all ages, from infants to older adults.

Physicians routinely order a scrotal scan to investigate sudden or chronic testicular pain, swelling, inflammation, or lumps found during a physical exam. It is highly effective for detecting fluid accumulation (hydroceles), enlarged veins (varicoceles), cysts, and testicular tumors. Furthermore, it is a critical emergency tool used to diagnose testicular torsion—a twisted spermatic cord that cuts off blood supply—and to assess urgent trauma from physical injuries.
