Obstetrics Scan/Biophysical Profile

An obstetrics scan with a biophysical profile (BPP) is a specialized prenatal ultrasound used to evaluate fetal health, usually during the third trimester. This detailed assessment combines real-time ultrasound imaging with a non-stress test to monitor five critical markers of fetal well-being. The ultrasound portion visualizes the baby’s body movements, muscle tone, and breathing efforts, while also measuring the volume of amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus. The non-stress test simultaneously tracks the baby’s heart rate response to movement. Each parameter receives a score, culminating in a total result that helps healthcare providers accurately gauge fetal oxygen levels and overall distress.
Obstetricians typically recommend this comprehensive surveillance for high-risk pregnancies or when a mother goes past her due date. It is highly effective for monitoring conditions like gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, or suspected fetal growth restriction. By providing a clear snapshot of the uterine environment, the BPP helps clinicians make timely, informed decisions regarding the timing of delivery. This ensures safety for both mother and baby.
